Example Web Sites

Below is a sampling of web sites I have designed.

DuRight Pest Control
Developed: December 2005 – May 2006

A graphic designer and I met with the clients regularly to assess their needs and translate their goals into concrete designs. I designed the layout and navigation for the inner pages of the site. The graphic designer selected the color scheme and created the homepage design. I converted the graphic designer’s work into functional code and web-optimized images.

When the clients log into the site, they can edit each page as if it were a Microsoft Word document. I made this possible by installing and configuring a tool called the TinyMCE rich text editor. This tool satisfied the clients’ desire to make small updates to the site themselves.

I wrote instructions on updating the site that the clients found clear and useful.

Techniques:

  • Translated vision and goals of graphic designer and clients into functional web site
  • Installed and customized Drupal content management system (MySQL, PHP)
  • Converted graphic designer’s page mockups into web page templates (HTML, CSS, PHP, Adobe Photoshop)
  • Optimized graphic designer’s images for the web (Adobe Photoshop)

CopyCense web site thumbnail

CopyCense
Developed: May 2005 – August 2005

The client had an existing online publication and wanted to create a new one about related topics. I created a set of categories for the articles and definitions for each category. I moved some existing articles from the old publication to the new one and labeled them with the new categories. I also created a custom template for the layout and color scheme of the site. The client created the banner image.

At the end of the project, I wrote documentation for the client explaining how to modify the template.

Techniques

  • Designed custom TypePad template (HTML, CSS, Moveable Type code)
  • Wrote instructions on updating the template
  • Organized information architecture by defining categories and classifying articles
  • Troubleshot TypePad software

Onondaga County Public Library web site designs: Template 1, Template 2

Developed: May 2005 – September 2005

At the request of the director of the Onondaga County Public Library, I created new designs for the library's web site. I began by reorganizing the existing content of the library's web site according to a more logical information architecture. I labeled the links with action-oriented, non-jargon words in the users' vocabulary. I also created navigation menus based around the new information architectures.

Techniques:

  • Created new page designs and layouts (HTML, CSS, Adobe Photoshop)
  • Designed information architecture by reorganizing content, selecting more easily understood words for the links, and creating navigation menus

Course Sites for ESF 200: Information Literacy
Developed: January 2005 – July 2005

I created this set of sites for the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF).

Per the instructors’ request, I created sites where the students can view the syllabus, assignments, and supplementary materials. I worked with the instructors to select colors and a design that matched their existing web site.

To make it as easy as possible for the instructors to update their sites, I designed the pages so that the instructors could upload their Microsoft Word files and the information in those files would appear in the appropriate part of each course page.

Alternative Course Site: Limitless Learning

Some instructors preferred to use a more sophisticated course management tool than we could set up under the constraints of the campus computer resources. For them I created the site LimitlessLearning.info. This site is an installation of Moodle, a web-based software product. Moodle provides a graphical interface for setting up and running online course sites.

Techniques:

  • Translated instructors’ needs and institution’s constraints into best-fit solution (HTML, CSS, SSI, Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF)
  • Designed web site using institution’s existing style and color scheme
  • Installed and configured Moodle course management system (PHP, MySQL)
  • Trained clients on updating the web site

WebCT Information Center
Developed: June 2004 – May 2006

During my tenure as a graduate assistant in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, I updated the faculty and student support site. I branded the site the WebCT Information Center, naming it after the online course tool used in the department, WebCT.

I wrote and created images for most of the tutorials and troubleshooting guides on this site, including Using library resources with WebCT, Using MyLibrary, WebDAV Tutorial, and the Troubleshooting guide.

I rewrote the code for this site, converting this site from a table-based layout to a pure-CSS design.

I conducted usability tests of this site and involved students in card-sorting exercises to determine ways to improve the organization and navigation of the site.

Techniques:

  • Created content and wrote code for WebCT Information Center web site (HTML, CSS, SSI, Adobe Photoshop)
  • Conducted usability tests and card-sorting tests of web site
