I am an information professional who builds web sites and tests designs on real people to make them pleasant and easy to use.
Education
I have a Master of Science degree from the School of Information Studies (iSchool) at Syracuse University. The faculty voted to award me the Master's Prize, the highest honor given to a graduating master's degree candidate in the Syracuse University School of Information Studies.
While in graduate school I studied: - user-centered design methods
- information architecture
- XML/metadata
- search engine configuration
- database design and administration
- related topics
Skills
- Coding Skills: HTML, XHTML, CSS, XML, SQL, PHP, and ColdFusion.
- Design Tools: Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Visual Web Developer Express, and Captivate.
- Web content management: Drupal, Wordpress, Mambo, and CMS400.NET.
User-centered design I design web sites and user interfaces based on common principles of usability. Whenever possible, I involve real users in the design process. The design methods I use include:
- Rapid iterative prototyping: To quickly test and revise a design based on user feedback, I create simulations or paper prototypes and test them with users.
- Card sorting: To gain insight into how to organize information based on where users expect to find it, I conduct card sorting exercises.
- Heuristic evaluation: I use checklists of common usability problems to find obvious areas for improvement in a design.
